SR Cowboy Ventures We have been the home of three outstanding stallions over the past seven and a half years and, since December 2002, we have been extremely honored to be the home of the magnificent and much-loved stallion, Hickory Chic Olena. Thank You to all the Breeders, Owners and Exhibitors world-wide who have made him an "Equi-Stat 5-Year Leading Reining Sire" since 2003. Hickory and his Offspring will continue to be remembered on their special page on our Web Site. The Home of Champions!
A Brief History Hickory is a magnificent stallion with a great mind and wonderful disposition. These traits, along with his athleticism and love of performing, have been aptly illustrated by his long career and distinguished show record. His proven ability to sire multiple Futurity, Derby & NRBC winners, have made him one of the performance industry's top stallions. After Ress purchased Hickory Chic Olena, the following year of 2003 was an eventful year. Hickory emerged from retirement, and shown by Drake Johnson, embellished his already numerous achievements. He added 36.5 AQHA Open Reining points to his existing 113.5 Amateur Reining points, earned a "2003 AQHA High Point Senior Reining - Top Ten" status, captured numerous AQHA and NRHA Championships, increased his NRHA earnings by 25%, and ended the year with an NRHA Futurity Open Freestyle Reining Reserve Championship title (his first bridleless performance).
2004 got off to a big bang for SR Cowboy Ventures when Hickory earned his AQHA Superior in Open Reining at the Pre-Denver Circuit and a Championship win at the January 2004 NWSS Dodge Invitational Freestyle Reining (again, bridleless!!). After a successful 2004 breeding season, Hickory began showing again, with an invitation to perform Freestyle Reining at Westfest in Snowmass near Aspen, Colorado. He then went on to win Open Championships & Reserve Championships culminating in an All American Quarter Horse Congress Senior Reining Reserve Championship. During his last two years in the showpen, as a 12 and 13-year old performer, Hickory Chic Olena increased his lifetime earnings by over 50%! In January 2005, Hickory bid farewell to his fans and his "show career" at the National Western Stock Show Dodge Invitational Freestyle Reining. SR Cowboy Ventures enjoyed five years successful years standing this handsome and truly talented stallion. On October 20th, 2007 at the Legacy Sale in Aubrey, Texas, John Lloyd became the proud new owner of Hickory Chic Olena. Hickory currently stands at his new home in Kentucky. With a reasonably priced stud fee, along with his proven record as a performer and a sire, Hickory Chic Olena is an outstanding choice for reining, cutting, and working cowhorse mares.
Owner Sally Ress has owned and stood numerous performance horse champions through SR Cowboy Ventures. Another standout stallion owned by Sally was Genuine Cowboy Jac. This handsome palomino stallion was trained and managed by Drake Johnson of Wray, Colorado. "Cowboy" touched the hearts and souls of thousands of fans throughout the United States who had the pleasure of watching him perform. The relationship between Drake and Cowboy was one many horsemen rarely accomplish during their entire lifetime. Only once in a great while comes along a stallion with the conformation, athleticism, disposition and ability to wow the crowd, and Cowboy was such a horse. In March 2002, SR Cowboy Ventures lost Genuine Cowboy Jac, and he will be greatly missed. However, the legacy of this special stallion continues on thanks to his talented offspring. Other top performers previously owned by SR Ventures include two gorgeous palomino stallions, Order Me A Shine (Shining Spark x Metermaid To Order) and Lenas Frosted Chex (Chex That Out x Budha Royal). A very talented athlete, Order Me A Shine earned over $21,000 in NRHA events on his way to capturing numerous championships, including a Silver Medal in Freestyle Reining at the 2003 USET Festival Of Champions. In September of 2003, Order Me A Shine was sold to Jose Paulo Vallone of Brazil. Lenas Frosted Chex, a 2004 Congress Reining Futurity Intermediate Open Finalist, was sold to Shari Jaster of Colorado later that year. In 2006, Five Star Wrangler, a 2004 bay gelding (Starlights Wrangler x Ima Hollihobby Horse) was added to the list of performers. “Five Star” is owned by Ernie Ress and currently in training with Dell for the 2007 futurity season!! And in late 2007, Kick N Nic, a 2005 sorrel stallion (Starbucks Sidekick x Gypsynic by Reminic) became Sally Ress’ newest performer at SR Cowboy Ventures and is in training at Hendricks Reining Horses for the 2008 Futurity Season. More exciting seasons to come!! Included in the SR Cowboy Ventures broodmare band are Hot Coded Candy (The Hot Express x Candid Cody by Joe Cody). “Candy” is a NP Futurity Top Five Finalist with NRHA earnings of $15,348 and the producer of offspring with NRHA & AQHA earnings over $60,820 including NRHA Open and Int Open Futurity Top Ten Finalists.
